The Best Expedition Cruises to Antarctica

BY KRISTOF EYCKMANS, LEAD CURATOR - TRAVEL & LIFESTYLE, 30TH AUGUST, 2024

Antarctica, which is aptly known as the white continent is without a doubt one of the biggest bucket list destinations in the world, and rightfully so. However, in recent years there’s been such a surge in the number of cruise companies that offer expedition cruises to the 7th continent that it’s hard to know which one to choose. Luckily our travel experience and deep knowledge of this remote destination allows us to create a list of the best expedition cruises to Antarctica. Let’s dive into it!

1. Scenic

Scenic currently only has 2 expedition ships but with a design that is based on one of the biggest superyachts in the world (the famous Eclipse), you’ll instantly see, feel and experience the level of luxury onboard these vessels. Modern interiors, some of the biggest staterooms found in the industry, and a service to match it. Don’t forget all the bells and whistles like the submarines, helicopters and so on which they carry onboard to make your trip down south even more adventurous!

2. Ponant

When you like to cruise with a French flair, there’s no better option than Ponant. With several vessels in its fleet, there’s always an itinerary that will suit you. They also have the legendary Le Commandant Charcot luxury icebreaker which is capable of reaching remote places no other ships can venture. Of course, the food onboard is top notch and the soft color tones allow for a relaxing experience. Don’t forget to indulge in some of the great French wines they have onboard which are of course included. Or as the French say: “L’Antarctique…c’est chic”!

3. Seabourn

Known for its luxurious cruises worldwide, Seabourn has 2 purpose-made expedition ships in its fleet that will pamper you through your journey to the white desert. For those looking for space and endless views, consider the panorama and owner suites, but on these all-suite vessels, there’s not a bad stateroom choice you can make. Besides the amazing hospitality and all the ship has to offer, don’t forget to try out a ride in one of their submarines!

4. Silversea

Very similar in style to Seabourn (they’re American rivals so to speak), it has 3 ships exploring the polar regions of which one, the Silver Endeavour is a real purpose-built gem. Nonetheless, the level of service and overall quality remain the same throughout the whole fleet. Make sure to try all the different dining options, and for those fearing the crossing of the Drake Passage, Silversea offers fly-in expeditions too. Oh…and they serve unlimited caviar for those who are keen!

5. Swan Hellenic

A brand with loads of history yet always flying just below the radar, making it the perfect hidden gem for many. All 3 of their ships are custom-built for these expeditions and it allows them to go into areas where others can’t always go. Also, their slightly smaller size gives you the luxury to spend more time on land which is a big bonus! Staterooms are spacious, and well-equipped and even have an electric fireplace to give you that cozy feeling while cruising past icebergs and glaciers. Their expedition team is also among the most knowledgeable and very experienced making it one of the best expedition cruises to Antarctica.

6. Lindblad

While they have 3 vessels operating in the region, we would only recommend 2 of them as they are brand new and offer much more comfort and luxury than the third one. They work closely together with National Geographic meaning they have a distinct focus on wildlife and nature. One unique feature you can’t miss out on is the two glass igloos on the back of the ship where you can spend a night during your voyage. Perfect to enjoy the long daylight hours and stretched sunsets, not to mention the Instagramable factor!

7. Quark

This company has 4 vessels even though they are all very different, hence why we would only suggest 3 for your trip to Antarctica. And even among those 3, we have a clear favorite, being the Ultramarine. Why? Because of its stylish interiors, great amenities, and of course the helicopter which allows you to fly over this white desert. In terms of luxury, it is a notch down from some of the above-mentioned, but it makes up in practicality thanks to its purpose-built ideology.

8. Antarctica 21

Offering only fly-in cruise expeditions Antarctica 21 does need a little bit of help from the weather gods as they need a clear weather window to fly you to and from the continent. Once in Antarctica, they have 2 ships, however, we would only recommend one of them, the Magellan Explorer as it’s more modern and offers much more comfort onboard. Another added bonus is the fact that the ship only takes 76 guests onboard, allowing you to spend a lot of time on land during the excursions.

9. Viking

Known for their modern river cruise ships, Viking ventured out with 2 purpose-built vessels called Octantis and Polaris. With a capacity of 378 guests, they are among the larger ships in Antarctica, so it will limit your time on shore a little bit at full capacity. That being said, they do offer several dining options, a large aula for gatherings, and of course some cool toys like the submarine and even 2 special operations boats.
